IT candidates are in high demand in many fields. It’s more important than ever for companies to have a competent IT professional on staff who can help manage all of their technology needs, from providing basic tech support to offering critical cyber security to the company as a whole. Hiring an effective IT professional, however, means looking for the right skills. What skills are hiring managers looking for? Check out this list to learn more.

1. Understanding of Mobile Integration

Many companies now need professionals who are able to work with mobile devices–especially to support the bring-your-own-device trend. This means that IT workers need to be capable of supporting a wide range of mobile devices. They may also need to provide mobile app development strategies or understand how to integrate mobile devices into the company network, depending on the current needs of the company.

2. Network Security

Cyber attacks have become increasingly common over the last several years, especially for small and medium sized businesses. Hackers have discovered that, while smaller businesses might not offer the same payoff as large ones, they also can’t afford the same degree of network security. As a result, network security has become increasingly important for IT professionals throughout most industries.

3. Soft Skills

An increasing number of companies understand that keeping up with more than the basics in the various areas of IT can be difficult for even the best IT candidates. 80% of companies expect to outsource a portion of their IT support, and 70% acknowledge that they’ll need to bring in outside resources for large IT projects. That means that many companies are focusing more on soft skills for their in-house IT positions–including communication, adaptability, and problem-solving. The ability to manage these key skills stands out to hiring managers far more than some hard skills, especially in companies that have the means to train new hires.

4. Agile Development

Agile development is a highly dynamic method of handling software development–and it’s in increasing demand in a wide range of industries. Many companies are turning to Agile as a more effective method of development, and being able to work within this strategy is a bonus for many potential employees.

5. Java

If you have to pick a programming language, Java is a safe bet. Knowing how to successfully use Java is an effective way to increase your employability in the IT industry and make you look better to potential employers, especially in a programming-related role.

6. Cloud Support

Many companies are now choosing to turn to cloud storage and operations for many of their business’s needs. It reduces the need for servers and other equipment, decreases IT costs, and increases uptime–but it also means that IT professionals within the business need to be able to effectively offer cloud support.

Throughout many organizations, IT needs are changing. Companies are looking for employees who are able to help them more effectively manage their existing systems. Many organizations are working with legacy systems while trying to update and bring their technology into a new generation–and IT professionals who can offer support for those systems are vital.

Many companies struggle to find employees who can handle JavaScript, mobile development, Python, and cloud support, while others are simply looking for IT professionals with the basic skills they need to fill the role while they train them to provide more specialized support.
