  1. Why did you choose Social Work as a career?

To be honest, Social Work is a very challenging, yet rewarding field to be working in. I’ve always felt a strong passion for working with individuals who need support, guidance, and assistance, but mainly someone to believe in them. For many years, I’ve wanted to work in the field of Social Work, specifically with children and their families. I’ve had a strong connection and bond with children for most of my life. I chose Social Work as my career because I’ve been able to recognize that not everyone in the world has the experience and background that I’m honored to have; therefore, I feel that it’s my time, and my privilege, to provide the world with strength, dedication, empowerment, and the respect it fully deserves. The field of Social Work is in high demand right now, and I feel as though I have the responsibility to help others through my advocation and knowledge to make the world a better place.

  1. What do you find to be the most rewarding part of your position?

As I mentioned previously, the field of Social Work can be challenging but very rewarding. Right now, I am currently a Program Supervisor. It is truly an honor and privilege to be able to be recognized, respected, and appreciated by my colleagues and even the individuals I supervise. One of the most rewarding aspects of being a supervisor is being able to provide ongoing knowledge and education to the Care Coordinators, and to assist them with providing support and assistance to their clients in all of their challenges. Another rewarding aspect in my career as a Social Worker is being able to help all individuals recognize their own strengths, for empowerment. It is also rewarding to help individuals acknowledge their challenges or obstacles, and to be able to configure a course of action together, as they are never alone. It is utterly beautiful and rewarding to be working in the field of Social Work, as I’m able to help change the world by saving one life at a time.

  1. What parts do you find the most challenging?

The field of Social Work has many challenges. Everyone in the world is very unique, filled with different experiences and stories that can be very challenging. In today’s world, there are challenges in Race, Gender, Mental Health, Poverty, Abuse, Trauma, Politics, Medicine, etc. The field of Social Work is truly endless, and there is no limit to how many obstacles an individual may face. There is a lack of knowledge, understanding, and empathy in the world, and as a Social Worker it can be very challenging to discuss certain topics, and to break stigmas that currently exist. As an individual, it can be very challenging to discuss topics such as Suicide, Substance Abuse, Identity, etc., but as a Social Worker, now is the most crucial and important time to break that silence and discuss those topics. Although there may be many challenges in the field of Social Work, it is not impossible to deal with these challenges, but rather it is Social Work’s duty to break the barriers that exist and face these challenges head on.

  1. What advice would you give someone considering Social Work as a career?

The most important advice I can give to someone considering Social Work as a career would be to absolutely do it! There have been times where I really reflect on my career choice, specifically in how early I am in my career, but also how much development and growth I’ve been able to achieve. The field of Social Work is very demanding and challenging, but truly unbelievable. In choosing Social Work as my career, I can identify the necessary skills that I need on a daily basis. My advice to someone considering Social Work as a career would be to recognize and acknowledge that there is a strong need for Social Workers in this world, and now is the right time, more than ever, to really change the world we live in. For any individual who is considering the field of Social Work, I recommend being prepared for the good and bad that comes with the field. There have been times where I didn’t know the next step to take, or I didn’t know if I had the right skills needed in different situations. I think it’s important to recognize early on that this field is growing each day, and it’s important to reflect within oneself to make sure that this field is where you want to be. My choice to pursue a Social Work career has been one of the best aspects of my life. I’ve been challenged and critiqued, but I’ve also been able to grow and develop into a much better person. I look forward to continuing my journey as a Social Worker no matter which obstacles I face, because I would never change the path I’m living on.

  1. Where do you see the field of Social Work going in the next 5 years?

In 5 years from now, I hope to see the field of Social Work continue to grow and develop. As mentioned before, this world has many challenges and obstacles that individuals face. I hope that the field of Social Work can break the silence, to discuss taboo topics, and end stigmas. Social Workers need to jump right into the work and be the change. As Social Workers, we can change lives, and I think that is truly so important. In 5 years from now, I know I will still be a Social Worker who is still striving to advocate for change in the world. I hope to see more individuals graduating with their degrees in the field of Social Work. I truly hope to see people expressing their need for help, and Social Workers, being able to meet those needs. My favorite quote is “Let the beauty of what you love, be what you do.” In 5 years from now, I hope Social Work can change the world, but more importantly, I can’t wait to see my role in it.
